MENOPAUSE AND DECREASED SEX
DRIVE
Dr.
Robin Kroll, a Seattle
gynecologist,
is a lead investigator for a study funded by Procter & Gamble
Pharmaceuticals measuring the effectiveness of the company's testosterone
skin patch for women, which has not yet been approved by the Food
and Drug Administration:
"As
women age, their testosterone levels fall. One of the hallmarks
of decreased testosterone levels in women is a loss of sexual desire.
We've already done clinical trials (of the patch) looking at women
who are taking hormone replacement therapy (the findings of this
study will be announced next month). Since the Women's Health Initiative,
lots of women have chosen to go off their hormones or declined to
start hormones. Because of that, we've decided to look at menopausal
women with low sexual desire who aren't taking hormone replacement
therapy. The question we're trying to answer is: Will women respond
as well to the patch alone if they have not replenished the estrogen
lost during menopause? These doses are replacement doses. We're
not trying to give women male levels of testosterone; we're trying
to give them female levels."
